Reading Aloud and Family, an experience.
reading aloud has changed in form and role in our home while we have tried to adapt this method to our family life.
We went through a kind of reading very informal, no matter where the book we read, or when we read, nor where it ended or not. We have several books "half-read" for some reason. Most of the time because obviously not the time, ongoing projects, children captivated by other interests, a baby who does not want to wait, etc.. And at the root, the lack of an established routine with a baby growing sometimes it is literally impossible.
also have experienced the semi-formal reading, where we have a couple of books that we want to finish reading because we all care about. We try to find times during the day to sit and meet with "the text" of the day, but without losing the spontaneity and surprise decision: Ah! What if we read a few pages?
Here we try to limit ourselves to one or two interesting books, read only a few minutes and while rest in some other physical activity. With a cool drink (lemonade is a favorite), fresh or dried fruit, or any other sandwich we all sat on the floor and from pillows to read.
With a quasi-formal reading we split up around 3 or 4 different books with a reading of each day. Because it is during meals that children remain seated, entertained, quiet and good humor, that's when I read those books that are serious but interesting. Those who do not ask me their own volition, but at the same time have the power to capture their interest. Regularly in the morning are texts of the biblical story in chronological order and without frills or explanations sweetened as if it were unreal myths and stories. Over lunch I read a history book in which are in turn contained short stories in chronological spread. For dinner a little poetry, classical mythology or some more annoying than usual. Some
crutches that help us achieve our goals modest (5 to 10 minutes of reading), because in real life successfully apply a methodology with 4 children and a thousand distractions is not easy:
lay a table, snacks -meals, swings, sandbox, water buckets and toys, crayons, watercolors, and anything else that can be done without much concentration. :)
The formal reading is that we made during the morning hours when it's time to "school." Routine follow-time readings with different frequencies during the quarter. We organized in our "classroom" and sitting in chairs facing each read while the children carry out any other activity as "crutches" that I mentioned above. In this type always require a narrative reading, one of the most important pillars of philosophy which CM and then discuss in more detail. Two or three readings are divided between different activities and themes that keep the flow of our morning session. Visit
